Mother
8x10 inches
Acrylic, Paper, Pencil, Canvas Board
Mother Mary is barefoot and draped in robes and head coverings, a curl of her dark hair escaping, her eyes gazing gently at the viewer, crowned in a halo rimmed with stars of David. She is drawn in pencil on tracing paper, adhered to a verdant background of backlit trees and a little stream of water rolling over rocks towards the viewer.
Mary is the Mother God I never had growing up. At this time, and while painting and writing this, I am very resistant to the concept of “God the Father,” but “God the Mother” I can begin to understand and relate to. I don’t use green in my work often, and so by using such lush green colors in this piece I am also entering into a new understanding and way of relating to God.
